Is the first song, Cantar de l’ayerán que perdió la guerra, about men like the Caxigal brothers, who continued to resist the Franco regime for many years after the war officially ended?

Nun les merecen, Art.

Prestágame tornar eses lletres porque dalgunes son braeramente emotives y a vegaes, comu nel casu del que fales, hestóriques.

Esi canciu fala d'un home wue vivión n'aquella dómina, sí, pero la mención a eses lletres escrites nel Puertu Braña fai mención a la otra razón de ser de los milicianos illegales, la revolución ya independencia de 1937 y la creación del Conseyu Soberanu d'Asturies y Lleón.

Poro, n'aquella dómina, había un solu exércitu illegal con dos motivos detremaos pa lluchar: unos escontra Franco y los facistes y per otru llau los nacionalistes que naguaben pola independencia de cualisquier invasor foriatu.

Foi'l so conceutu común de ser asturianos y tener el mesmu enemigu, l'exércitu español, la razón pola que taben nel mesmu exércitu, llucharon xuntos y morrieron xuntos.

Anguañu, cau esa piedra del Puertu Braña y nes foses comunes y llugares de fusilamientu de los militares asturianos hai homenaxes y reivindicaciones tantu de los nacionalistes asturianos comu de los republicanos, nos mesmos sitios talamente.

I really wanted to transalte those lyrics because some of them are really emotional and sometimes, like the song you mention, historical.

That song is about a man who lived in that ages, yeah, but the mention of those letters written in the Braña Port makes mention to the other reason for being an outlaw milician, the revolution and independence of 1937 and the creation of the Sovereign Council of Asturies and Lleón.

Thus, in that ages, there was one single kind of ilegal army with two different motives to fight: ones stated against Franco and the fascists and the other kind nationalists who claimed for independence against any kind of foreign invasor.

Was their common conscoiusness of beign Asturians and to have the same enemy, the Spanish army, the reason why they were in the same army, fought together and died together.

Nowadays, in that stone of the Braña Port and in the mass graves and shooting execution points of the Asturian military there are both homages and vindications by the Asturian nationalists and by the republicans, in the very same places.

Thanks, Anzu. I didn't realize there were two different motivations for resistance. Do you think the desire for independence has diminished since then? Are there people still willing to fight for independence?

Asturian nationalism nowadays

L'enfotu por algamar la independencia, sicasí sigue enforma presente nuna parte de la población asturiana, camudó munchu dende aquella dómina, tantu en motivos comu en medios.

Si bien ye verdá que la identidá asturiana ta enforma más amenorgá anguañu pola afogante españolización de la cabera dómina, la seición nacionaliega ta munchu meyor definía. Na cabera declaración d'independencia, l'enfotu nacionaliegu foi dafechamente popular, puesto que la so seición política nun yera representativa de la sociedá, igual qu'anguañu. Preba d'ello ye la cusi total reencadarmación del gobiernu, si bien siempres de mou democráticu y asambleariu que se fizo.

Na dómina actual, si bien sigue siendo la clas popular aquella col enfotu nacionaliegu, probatiblemente nun seya tan bultable comu la d'entós, si bien ta enforma más illustrá nos motivos del nacionalismu, hestóricos, políticos, sociales... Lo que sí ye que dende los años 80 una parte perimportante del nacionalismu asturianu ta compuestu por intelleutuales y presones d'un altu nivel cultural y formativu.

Agora mesmo el nacionalismu asturianu encadármase sobro partíos políticos abiertamente nacionaliegos y siempres de calter estriutamente socialistes y demócrates: Andecha Astur y la so seición xuvenil Darréu, (de la que formo parte), Conceyu Abiertu y Compromisu por Asturies, amás de les seiciones políticamente afines de sindicatos: CSI (Corriente Sindical d'Izquierda), SUATEA (Sindicatu Unitairu y Autónomu de Trabayaores de la Enseñanza d'Asturies) y tamién muerganizaciones vindicaes cola llingua asturiana: Xunta Pola Defensa de la Llingua Asturiana.

Ente otros partíos nacionalistes qu'esistieron y esapaicieron tan: XENA, ENA (Ensame Nacionalista Astur), IAS (Izquierda Asturiana), PAS (Partíu Asturianista) y UNA (Unidá Nacionalista Asturiana).

En cualisquier casu, el nacionalismu n'Asturies tien sos puntos álxidos y baxos a lo llargo la hestoria, comu foi'l 1808, 1934, el 1937 dempués, na época del Xurdimientu nos 80-90... Sicasí, namái nestes tres feches (08, 34 y 37) llegose al nivel de la llucha armá.

A esto habría que facer delles esceiciones, comu'l casu de presones comu Fer G. R. y otros que nos tiempos d'anguañu abogaron per una vía de llucha armada pola lliberación nacional, comu IRA ficiera n'Irlanda y foron acusaos de terrorismu pol Estáu Español.

Asina que si caberamente la mayoría del nacionalismu asturianu ta afincáu nes bases democrátiques y polítiques, de xemes en cuandu grupos de presones opten pola aición direuta armá, cuntando curiosamente con un sofitu social ablucante.

Sobro esti caber tema recomiendo la llectura del llibru escritu pol propiu Fer G. R. entituláu "Amarraza. 102 díes baxu la llei antiterrorista". Ensin en dengún casu cola intención de facer apoloxía nin proselitismu de les sos opiniones, pero sirve d'acercamientu a le esperiencies vivíes en primera presona, lo irracional del sistema carcelariu y les dudoses práutiques llegales de la supuesta democracia española.

The aim for reaching the independence, even when is still present in a part of the Asturian population did change a lot since those days, both in ways and in means.

Even when is true that the Asturian identity has been quite decreased due to the choking Hispanization of the last times, the nationalist section is way better defined. In the last declaration of independence, the nationalist initiative was almost totally popular, cince the political section was not representative of the society, very much likely to the current days. A proof of it is the almost total restructuring of the government of then, always in a democratic and assemblyist way.

In the current times, though the popular class is still the one with the nationalist aim, maybe is not as big as back then, despite being much more ilustrated in the motives of nationalism: historical, political, social... What is true is that since the 80's a very important part of the Asturian nationalism is composed by intellectuals and people of a very high cultural and formative level.

Nowadays the Asturian nationalism is settled on openly nationalist political parties, always strictly on the basis of socialism and democracy: Andecha Astur and its youn section Darréu, (in which I find myself), Conceyu Abiertu and Compromisu por Asturies, apart of the politically related sections of unions: CSI (Left Winged Union Current), SUATEA (Unitary and Autonomous Union of Education Workers of Asturies) and also organizations related to the Asturian language: Xunta Pola Defensa de la Llingua Asturiana (Board for the Defense of Asturian Language)

Among other parties that there were and exist no more there are: XENA, ENA (Astur Nationalist Board), IAS (Asturian Left Winged), PAS (Asturianist Party) and UNA (Asturian Nationalist Unity).

Anyway, the Asturian nationalism has its high and low points across history, like the 1808, 1934 and 1937, later in the days of the Rising in the 80's-90's... Almost only in these three dates (08, 34, 37) there was an armed fight.

To that we must add some exceptions, like the case of people like Fer G. R. and others who nowadays claimed for an armed fight for the national liberation, like the IRA did in Ireland, and they were accused of terrorism by the Spanish State.

So in conclusion lately the Asturian nationalism is settled in the politically democratic basis, sometimes people choose the direct armed action, having curiously an amazing social support.

About that last topic I encourage the reading of the book written by Fer G. R. himsef titled "Amarraza. 102 díes baxu la llei antiterrorista" (Struggle. 102 days under the anti-terrorist law)". Without in any case making apology nor proselytize of his opinions, but it is useful to understand closely the first person experiences, the Spanish irrational prison system and the dubious practices of the so called Spanish democracy.
