GARCIELLA

Post by Marta Elena Díaz García »

GARCIELLA is the name given in Asturias to a ladle. Other synonyms are: GARCILLA and GARFIELLA.

A typical expression in Asturias to refer to a person who is dim-witted or thick-headed is “Falta’i una garcillada” (literally: he/she lacks a ladleful).

A conundrum in which the garciella is included is:

Cien redondinos (one hundred small rounds)
y un redondón (and one big round)
un saca y un mete (one take out and one put into)
un quita y un pon (one take from and one put on)

Anwser:
The chickpeas (los garbanzos)
The pot (la pota)
The ladle (la garciella)
Tap of the pot (la tapa)

That's an interesting one because it's three riddles in one.

We don't her many riddles in North American English these days. Are they still common in Asturian/Spanish circles?

The most common one I know in English is:
What's black and white
and red [or read] all over?

"Red" and "read" are pronounced the same, so it's a riddle that depends on a pun. The answer is: A newspaper.

You can tell that this is an old riddle because most newspapers today have color on a majority of the pages.

Thanks for posting a new word, Marta!

------------------------------
