Bonjour,

Good evening,

At the moment, I'm at a loss (floundering)....., the only information I have is the following.

My great great grandmother married for the first time with Jean Depon, with whom she had two children (one of whom was my great grandfather), and she divorced him four years after the marriage.

She left for Cuba, where she married a Jospeh Muñiz, (and) in 1894 a third child was born--François Muñiz.

In 1901 she was present at the death of her father at Layrac (Lot et Garonne in France), and I lost track of her until 1921 when she again showed up in Layrac with her son (who married a Marguerite who was also born in Layrac)), and after the death of her mother she was called the Widow of Joseph Muñiz (but I can;' find any record of the death of her husband at Layrac), (and) her mother died in 1922 at Layrac..

Between 1922 and 1925 she left several records at Layrac,
but everything returns to Layrac in 1925 and I have lost track of her since then.

She didn't die at Layrac... according to family sources, she returned to Cuba and died there.

Her son Francis also reports the same thing (that she returned to Cuba).

This is where I now stand in my research.

This is it for the Rocafulle line, but my husband's family is surely from Valencia, ....

Here are a few thoughts.

Well, there is the Spanish name MUNIZ, with an N, but mostly in Latin America, more precisely in Uruguay, derived from the Portuguese Munis or Monis, as a result of marriages with Brazilians (the unstressed O in Portuguese sounds like the French OU, and it is the I that has the accent, which explains the difference in spelling, and the Z is pronounced as it is in French in Latin American Spanish.) On the other hand the name Munis in Portugal seems to be of Asturian origin, coming from the medieval "Reconquest" and from nobles exiles for having risen up against the king of Castille. One can find other MUÑIZ with an Ñ in Galicia, several of whom were artisans of Asturian origin working at Saint James of Compostella, especially in the coal mining industry. which has a long tradition in Asturias, and of which Asturias has most of the deposits in Spain.

The name MUÑIZ is more common that MUNIZ in all of the Spanish speaking countries. Nevertheless, we are not talking about the Middle Ages but of the last years of the 19th Century. A person name MUÑIZ in Cuba could have come from whatever corner of Spain, because the name is widely scattered. Yet it's true that Asturians never provided a large number of immigrants to America during the age of conquest, but came quite a bit later. What's more, they had a preferred country, which was Cuba. As a result, it is very likely that this MUÑIZ was of Asturian origin.

Today you can find the name MUÑIZ just about everywhere in Asturias, but its origin is in the County of Carreño . Today, it's also very common in the County of Gijón. Don't forget to research under the original given names without adapting them to French: Joseph = José, Francis = Francisco

You can look in the Registro Civil, which began in Spain in the year 1870. For earlier births, you have to look in the records of the Catholic Church. You have to know the place of birth and the approximate date.

You can also ask the Ärchives des Indiens¨)the ïndianos¨is one of the names given to Asturians emigrants to America.

I think that ¨calenda¨must be CALANDA, a lilttle town in the Aragonese region of Teruel, in the south of Aragon. As you know, Aragon neighbors Catalonia and the Valencian country is very near to Teruel. The name CAEBPONELL is typically Catalan, and the Catalan language is spoken in Catalonia, Velencia and the Balearic Ilses. In addition, Aragon is just to the south of the Pyrenees and to Aquitaine, where Layrac is located. It is not too uncommon to find Catalan names in Aquitaine. For example, as famous heroine of the Napoleonic Wars, Augustina of Aragaon, was actaully named Augustina Domenech, which is also a Catalan name.

Accordingly, you can research CALANDA )in the province of Terual=, and also in the Valencian region )the privinces of Valencia, Alicante and Castellon) and also Catalonia (the provinces of Lerida or Lleida, Barcelona, Tarragona, and Gerona or Girona).

"ROCAFULLE" could be ROCAFULL, another name of Catalan origin, which is quite common in the region of Valenica.

If I can help you any further, don't hesitate to ask. Good luck.

Bob, thanks a lot for your English translation, but a little thing: there isn't any coal mining industry in Galicia. French word "jais" is "jet" in English, as in "jet-black", "acebache" in Asturian and "azabache" in Spanish.

Thanks for the correction Carlos. I just had a mental image of a shiny black mineral in my mind, and it came out as coal rather than jet when I wrote it down.
