OUR LADY OF THE CEBRANO (Nuestra Señora del Cébranu).

Post by Marta Elena Díaz García »

The sanctuary of Our Lady of the Cébrano is allocated in the council of Teverga, in a place named Cébrano.

The sanctuary was first known as Saint Mary of Carrea (IX century), but it was during the XII century when the devotion to Saint Mary started inside and outside of Teverga.

The carving of Our Lady of the Cébrano is Romanesque-Byzantine and its arrival to the sanctuary is preceded by nice legends. Among them, the most extended refers its arrival to Teverga after the Guadalete Battle (fought in 711) with the aim to protect her from the muslim arabs and berbers. It was a shepherd who found the carving in a cave. The head of the carving was covered with a type of copper bowl decorated with geometric inscriptions.

For long time (until it was stolen), the pilgrims were cured of headaches and other cerebral diseases, by the laying on of the bowl. It is the reason why Our Lady of the Cébrano is the advocate of those diseases. It is believed that the etymology of “Cébrano” originates from “cerebro” (brain). A new copper bowl, similar to the original, was made during the restoration of the sanctuary to continue with the tradition.

Inside the sanctuary, there are also other carvings. One of Jesus Christ (XV c.) and another one of Saint Antony (probably c. XVII).
