Camino de Santiago through Oviedo

Post by samanthadavies »

Hi there! I'm planning on doing the Northern Route of the Camino de Santiago. From what I've read, it borders the Cantabrian Sea and goes through Gijon. After Gijon I can either go through Oviedo or Aviles to Santiago.
I was wondering which city is worth to pay a visit, so I can decide which way to choose - more inclined towards Oviedo, but wanna hear the local's opinion. Found this website with all the stages of the Camino del Norte, but it goes from Gijon to Aviles and then all the way to Santiago. Does anyone have any info on the stages from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela?
Thank you so much!

Hi, Samantha,

Oviedo, Gijón, and Avilés are the three main cities in Asturias. They're very different from each other and very close. If you've got time, it's easy to take a bus or train from one to the other and would be well worth the effort. There are museums in Oviedo, especially, that are worth seeing and its older areas are very beautiful. The old town in Avilés is a museum in itself. Gijón is dynamic and exciting. There's plenty to do and see in all three.

If I had to chose just one of Oviedo and Avilés, I'd look at the route to see what towns and sites the routes pass by... and that may be your question!

This is a good question. I've posted it on our facebook group page, too.

Bill Garcia wrote on Facebook at 9:24pm Dec 14 2017:
The Ruta Antigua is rugged and has very few places to stay; there are some long stretches between accommodations. Also depends on when in the year you go -- temperature is a winter concern in the high mountains. Might also post the question in the www.AmericanPilgrims.org site for more expert views than my anecdotal understandings.

Hi Bill, thanks a lot for your help! I've been researching and looking at routes and I think Oviedo is gonna be the chosen one, seems to have more accommodation and easier to follow. I might just leave it for next June-July, too cold for the winter. So excited, can't wait to visit Asturias next year :)

El primer camino de Santiago, fue el que hizo Alfonso II entre Oviedo y Santiago.
The first way of Santiago, it was what did Alfonso II between Oviedo and Santiago.
