For place names (toponyms), it is often possible to determine what they were called by those who lived there (or nearby), as evidenced by their modern day place names. The roots * KAR ® - or * KAL- gave rise to (h) arri ['stone', in Basque] and many place names such as Carria, a long rock that includes Alles and Trescares (in Peñamellera), and Calpe, the old name for Gibraltar, a city with another rock, the Cueta de Gibraltar; Calpe was also a seaport in Thrace of Asia, where the adventurer Xenofon arrived 2419 years ago, and which was at the foot of a craggy slope (Anabasis, VI, 4).

But, in addition to the so-called Cuetón de Xibraltar there is a second place with an even mo massive monolith, (in) the council of Alicante from Calpe (Calp, in Valencian), very well known as El Peñón d'Ifach, a big rock named Penyal d'Ifac in the local language. The Basque derived suffixes –BE and –PE, refer to ‘baxu’ which means ‘low-lying,’ or ‘at the base of.’ from which we can derive the meaning of the word Calpe.

From these roots could then also come (* KAR ® - + -BE) Carbes (the town of Amieva, which is below Picu Castiellu and Cuetu Mayu, two peaks that merit attention), Cáraves (town of Peñamellera Baja a cuetu that is called Llosa Vizcallana) and, with metathesis and suffixes abundativu -AL, Cabrales, for in Carreña, the capital of the conceyu [a political or admiiistrative region] (Cabrales is nothing more than the name of the municipality), there are some famous peaks above the town, including La Corona.

TRANSLATOR’S NOTES.

Anabasis is the name of an epic, Xenophon of Athens. which describes an attempt to aid the rebel Persian prince Cyrus in what is now Iran.

I have tried to translate the sense of Ramon’s original post rather than a more literal translation. Asturianufalantes, I would appreciate your posting any comments on or corrections to my translation.
