Non-US & Spanish disasters / Desastres no de EE.UU. &

Post by Art »

Carlos asked me an interesting question a while back. He wondered why there were discussions on the forum about disasters in the US and in Spain, while nothing was mentioned about disasters elsewhere in the world.

This could be a result of members thinking that these other disasters don't relate directly to the purpose of the forum. Maybe, but maybe not.

I've been concerned that we haven't been as generous with the disaster of the earthquake in Pakistan and India. One story said: "Americans have given $43 million to earthquake victims, a fraction of the $1.5 billion they donated after December's Asian tsunami."

Wow. Why is the giving so much lower? Are we burned out after so many disasters in a short time? Is there something about the situation that makes us less interested?

What do you think?

...maybe because most tsunami victims were blond-blue-eyed western tourists from Europe, Australia, NZ, USA, etc.?
Don't you recall the media hype about little two-year old Hannes, the Swedish boy who was finally reunited with his injured father in a hospital and whose mother died in the flood? Have you seen that done with any of the native orphan children?

Africa has tsunamis all year, and yet the aid money that Tony Blair had alloted to an aid campaign for Africa, was sent to Thailand for tsunami relief. After all the hotels and businesses in S.E. Asia are largely of western capital...
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
