The Golden Thread: Religion & identity in Asturian...

Post by Art »

Mouguias (Cristobo) has sent me the original Asturian and an English translation of The Golden Thread: Religion and identity in Asturian oral tradition, a paper he delivered in Ponga early in 2009. He has has offered it for any Asturian-Americans interested in reading it. See below for links.

I'll post a couple of paragraphs here.
The Golden Thread:
Religion and identity in Asturian oral tradition

Cristobo de Milio Carrín, February 2009

Asturian myths and legends hold lots of information about our past which hardly has been explored. How many questions might be answered through the research of our myths?

Among the many myths of Asturias there is one which stands for its beauty – the Golden Thread. It tells of a casual traveler who walks by a well and finds, floating over the water, a golden thread. He holds the end and starts to wind it, but the thread is very long and the man doesn`t manage to finish the ball. When he is close to the end of his task the thread tears and then a voice is heard from the well, the voice of the “xana” (faery) whose was the thread. She laments that with only one more winding he would have earned a treasure but now, Alas! He has lost it altogether.
