A speech by Próspero Morán will kick off the “Folixa de la Primavera” (Spring Spree) in Mieres

The opening greetings by the director of Asturnews will give way to three consecutive days of activities within this festival, which turns the city of the Way of St. James into the Asturian capital of culture and merriment. Cider parties, sampling of local fare, theater, traditional music and dances will make up the program of this year’s festival, which will also include the traditional nightly folk concerts. On this occasion the Irish band Solas is the main attraction, together with N’Arba, Skanda and Mugar.

This coming weekend Mieres will host one of the most singular and attractive festivals held in Asturias with the onset of good weather. Ancient customs like the spring cider-keg tapping recover their original meaning as a sign of Asturian identity within this celebration, which offers a great variety of popular games and cultural activities for everybody to take part in. This is the singular brandname that makes the Mieres spree a unique celebration in Asturias and one of the best planned festivals when it comes to programmed activities.

For this edition Próspero Morán, director of Asturnews, will take over the baton from the speakers of previous years: the journalist José Luis Argüelles in 2003 and the writer Xuan Bello last year. His speech will be aimed at encouraging the “mierenses” to meet the basic objective of this spree: ensure that folks actively participate in the various events to make the city of the Way of St. James the liveliest place in the country for 3 days straight.

Popular music and folklore play an important role in the Folixa de Primavera, so that from the evening of next Friday, April 15th to Sunday morning, April 17th, there will be bagpipe bands and the local street band marching through the streets; there will be a mining song festival, folklore get-togethers and the Asturian bagpipe “Chema Castañón Memorial Prize” will be awarded. Friday and Saturday night there will be the renouned Asturian and international folk concerts; on Friday Skanda and the Irish band Solas will perform and the next day N’Arba and Mugar.

Traditional dances on stage and in the streets will be performed, inviting everybody to participate, and there will be street theater performances, which will include Asturian folk theater.
However, the spotlight will be on Asturian cider and gastronomy, as our land’s own cultural expression, probably in an attempt to ensure that no one can go away saying that Mieres’ Folixa de Primavera was too short.*

*Play-on-words: “saber a poco” is used not only to complain about scarce meals, but also to describe any event that ends too soon.

Let me see if I got this right...you folks in Mieres are going to celebrate a spring festival, just like that, like a mega cider party? We can't miss out on that!
I don't know what I had planned for this weekend, but I'm sure it can wait

If you see Próspero, give him my regards. (From Tere, great-grandaughter of A. González Abín, he'll know).
