Anécdota minera / Mining anecdote

Post by Terechu »

Back in the 60's, after 25 years without labour unions, finally the Franco regime realized that employers and workers needed a channel of communication and thus the "vertical" Unions were created. (Vertical meaning that representatives were appointed from the "Top"). The employers would suggest several workers who were not given to create conflicts and the miners had to elect their representatives among this group.
I'm told that in the pit Mina Praón (Sta. Bárbara, S.Martín del Rey Aurelio) one of the best known miners mentioned that those guys from the "Vertical Union" would do just as much for them as the mule "Platera".
No further comments were made on the matter. When election day came and the votes were counted, most ballots read: "Platera", the name of the mule that worked at the train.

I was president of our faculty union for over 30 years. Viva Platera!
