Measurement Equivalents - Medidas Equivalentes

Post by Art »

When Europeans write recipes they measure by weight. This is baffling to Americans who tend to measure by volume. This list of equivalents for measuring ingredients may help you bridge the gap.

In the US, there are different measuring systems for dry materials and liquids. In most cases, for example, dry ounces (a weight) is not the same as liquid ounces (a volume). Cups, tablespoons, and teaspoons are similar since they are all measures of volume, but there are different kinds of measuring cups for dry and liquid ingredients.

NOTE: The teaspoon, tablespoon, and cup measures are standardized. We usually use specialized tools, not the things we eat and drink with.

The following equivalents are approximate. A cup of two different kinds of flour or beans, for example, might have different weights. Often this is because they have differing amounts of water in them (one will be drier). Plus, I've not tested these, so I can't vouch for their accuracy. As a cook I'm one who tosses in a little of this, dash of that, chunk of the other, and ah, yes, more garlic!!

---------------

Art, you are a treasure! That helps me with my "Recipes and Menus from Alabama" by Ruth Liles. I bought that book many years ago in Atlanta and have only been able to use the more common recipes, because it has no conversion chart.

I'm glad that was useful.

Let me know if there are other ingredients you need conversions for. These are usually easy to figure out from the packaging.

" " harina " 10grs.
" " fécula de patata " 13grs.
" " tápioca " 13grs.
"" " cacao " 12grs.
" " mantequilla " 20grs.
" " arroz " 18grs.
" " sal " 18grs.
Líquidos:
1cucharadita tamaño café equivale a 5grs.
" de postre " 10grs.
1 taza tamaño mediano equivale a 100grs.
1 vaso de agua " 250grs. 1/4l.

Thanks Joma, those measurements are sure hard to find. Besides, as the tablespoons and teaspoons vary so much in size, sometimes you can spoil a recipe by adding too much baking powder or not enough sugar, etc.

I'm writing down a recipe for baked apples that are gonna make you lick your fingers to the elbows! Coming soon to your computer screens!

Ah, yes, that's an excellent point. We use special, standardized measuring devices for teaspoons, tablespoons, and cups. Without those, our recipes would never be the same.

I'll edit the original message to reflect this.
