I am, to say the least, extremely offended by the comments of Cheney (aka Darth Vader). Just another example of how our current "leaders" have appealed to the lowest common denominator of American "pop" culture and beliefs. The whole lot of them, George W., Cheney, Karl Rove etc ...

Hi Linda, Just saw your message. Ironically I just returned from Spain last night...was there to celebrate my 60th (gulp!) birthday. Didn't go to Asturias this time, but rather southern Spain. Great time. I would love to see photos of some of the Asturian sites in Anmoore/Clarksburg..thanks for your...

Hi Villarmarzo Magadan, Don't have any info on Magadan in Spain, however there are several families of that surname in Tampa, which had one of the largest Asturian communities in the USA by the 1930's. In fact, the mother of Lou Piniella, the well-known former Yankee outfielder and now manager of the...

Hi Bob and Ramon, Just to advise......as I research local genealogies here in Tampa, it has come to my attention that many Asturianos entered the USA thru Port Tampa during the late 1800's and first 3 decades of the 1900's. There was a steamship that ran between La Habana and Tampa. Most of the Span...

Hola Ramon...My name is Tony Carreno and I am from Tampa, Florida. Tampa had many Asturianos who arrived in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Many came via Cuba, others directly from Spain. There were several families of "Granda" in Tampa. many of whom were from the area around Infiesto. T...

Hi KC,

I wasn't aware of large clusters of Asturianos in the West....my understanding is that the sheepherders were almost exclusively Basque, not Asturiano....but I could be wrong......anyone else have any info about this??

Basques in the West

Hi Sandy...We speak again. I lived in California for 11 years...but as great as it was...I never could find authentic Spanish cuisine and food products...so back to Tampa!! There are many Basque communities in the West..and yes, it's all about sheep. The major centers of Basque culture are Boise, Id...

Bob......Excellent suggestion on the oral histories. I regret deeply not having done this in the past. This is the very crux of what we are doing..it really is all about the people and their experiences and challenges. This is why I so very much enjoyed hearing your dad and Ron reminisce about thier...

2006 Symposium on the Asturian Presence in the USA

I was most fortunate to have attended the symposium on 24FEB and 25FEB. I was expecting good things from it, but frankly it far exceeded my expectations....it was GREAT!! All of the organizers did a fantastic job and I'm especially proud of the presentations our own web-site buddies did. Suronda's t...

Robert,
Thanks for the info re the passenger lists. My understanding is that the
emmigration to Cuba from the northern provinces of Spain peaked from about 1890-1930...any chance of obtaining access to those lists in the future???
