I am a new contributor to this forum. My interest is finding anyone who knows of Asturians connected to Arizona. The copper industry early in the last century really grew and in looking at many accounts, it seems Spaniards were present in the labor force.
My interest in this topic has two sources !) Professional and 2) Personal. Let me start with the personal. My ties to spain are to Sevilla, through my son's marriage 11 years ago to a lovely Spanish woman. Now I have three grandchildren (two girls from Pepa's 1st marriage and 1 boy from her and my son.) Through many trips to Spain and the knowledge my oldest grandaughter has shared with me, my interest in Spain has grown dramatically. Sadly, my Spanish language skills have not. I can read some, but am not fluent.
2) For many years I've worked reearching the ethnic labor force in Arizona history. My early work was on Italians, which is my ancestry, and then Mexicans. Both groups worked together and shared communities in the camps. But, Spaniards were occasionally mentioned and one day I decided to explore their hsitory as well. All three groups fell into a category I'd call Latin and as such were not always welcomed, were paid low wages and also grouped together for support.
Recently reviewing naturalization papers for mining areas several Spaniards there traced their home to the Asturian region. When I located this website it seemed a good place to start looking for additional information.
I've looked at some of the research available on WEst Virginia, but see nothing on Arizona.
My goal is to add more detailed knowledge to Arizona's history that will include information on the contributions of Spaniards.
Anyone who assists me would recieve recognition in any publications that come out of my work.
I've presented a preliminary paper in June at the Mining History conference and am currently working on a paper for the American Sociological Association's conference in Montreal in August.
Cordially, Phylis
